Florence Otedola, aka DJ Cuppy, Nigeria’s premier female DJ, has appeared on MTV2’s talkshow Uncommon Sense, performing and participating in the show’s topical debates. Filmed in New York, the 30-minute show on MTV2 saw the 23-year-old showcasing some of the hottest new tracks coming out of Nigeria’s contemporary music scene as well as US hits, with a variety of hip hop, R&B and some old school records featured in her set.

Cuppy featured alongside major US acts including rapper T-Pain, reality TV star Tahiry, hip-hop journalist Rob Markman, and actor Damien Lemon. The show was hosted by musician and presenter Charlamagne tha God, and was broadcast throughout the USA.

Speaking ahead of the filming, Cuppy, said: “It’s hugely exciting to be on the show with such a talented group of people. I was on Charlamagne’s radio show earlier in the year and it’s great to be a guest of his again – this time on MTV2. We get on really well and I hope we can carry on working together.”

Cuppy recently completed a continental tour across Africa, performing in front of thousands of fans in eight countries and engaging in a number of charitable programmes in association with The Dangote Foundation. She is currently interning with Jay Z’s label Roc Nation while she completes a Masters degree at New York University.

Cuppy also hinted at her ambitions to raise the profile of Nigerian music in the US.

“Touring Africa this summer was an amazing experience. It was such a privilege to be welcomed into so many wonderful communities and to bring them a taste of what the Nigerian music scene has to offer. I’m looking forward to showcasing that culture in the States, and opportunities like Uncommon Sense are a great way for me to start doing that,” she said.
